Letter to the editor:

Give voter-approved term limits a chance

An editorial in Tuesday’s Las Vegas Sun, “We have the power,” is so far off base that the editorial writer should be on term limits. The last two sentences in the editorial were: “We can simply go to the polls and boot out the incumbent. Now that’s democracy in its purest form.”

So what do you call going to the polls and voting for term limits? Chopped liver?

This country, this county and this state are broke. How did this all happen? There’s an easy answer: It’s because of the same people who keep getting elected over and over again. You say we can simply go to the polls and boot them out, but that is easier said than done.

Thank God we have term limits when it comes to the president. If we had term limits only for Congress this country would be in a much different situation from what it is in today. Term limits would give more people a chance to do jobs for this country without spending a fortune to get elected. People would stop buying positions if they knew they would be around only eight years.

An elected position in government is not a lifetime appointment; it’s an opportunity for a person who thinks he can do something for this country to put in time and make a personal sacrifice.

My hat’s off to Clark County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury, but what’s wrong with change? I think he has had his day in the sun, and maybe the next commissioner will do a better job; only time will tell.

Let’s give term limits a chance — that would be democracy in its purest form.
