Letter to the editor:

U.S. ingenuity equal to gas price challenge

The last thing we need in this energy crisis are naysayers; we need “yeasayers” such as Al Gore. The naysayers got us into this mess and that is exactly why we are still facing this energy problem.

Recently there was loud rhetoric in Congress in various committee investigations and in the administration, but with no concrete, viable solution. In fact, the ethanol program, once thought a possible cure, is a farce, causing worldwide shortages of food, and needs immediate action to curtail its frightening effects.

Yes, there are many problems to overcome, but Mr. Gore’s plan needs careful study and where feasible, with positive results, it should be adopted.

It took time and great effort to send people to the moon, and with our determination and positive attitude, we can lessen and possibly solve our energy problem. Numerous inventions and technologies originated in this country by those who never gave up, trying and working many hours — experimenting often without adequate funds — until they succeeded with ideas, products and methods that many thought were impractical or just dreams.

Yet, with study, applying good old American ingenuity by those dedicated to solving the possible and those thought impossible, and the appropriation of necessary funds, the solutions can and must be found, applied and used to wean us off foreign oil.

Our business leaders, including gaming industry executives and others whose businesses could not survive without adequate energy sources, must join with others to press the lethargic administration and Congress to get moving now. Don’t let the recent drop in oil prices slow down any efforts. We Americans are not accustomed to taking things lying down.
