Letter to the editor:

Water series is timely, informative

Congratulations to the Las Vegas Sun and to writer Emily Green for Sunday’s story headlined “Quenching Las Vegas’ thirst,” the first part of a five-part series. The article was quite accurate and, in my view, outstanding journalism. The use of graphics and old photos was quite effective. Her statistics and historical records were impeccable.

I well remember the natural spring we often visited at Highway 160 near the railroad tracks on the way to Blue Diamond from Las Vegas. We often stopped there to drink and fill our water bottles on outings.

A visit to Walker Lake, near Hawthorne in Central Nevada, says it all. As you enter the lake area, you are greeted on the downhill dirt road to the lake by signs showing the water line for the past few decades. By the time you arrive at the current level of the lake, you will be several hundred feet below where it was only a few short years ago.

I look forward to reading the next four articles.
