Letter to the editor:

Clinton fails to show class in defeat

Barack Obama made history Tuesday when he clinched the Democratic nomination for the presidency. It would have been just as historic if Hillary Clinton had done so.

Yet the lead story on the news wasn’t that he had wrapped up the nomination, but that she refused to acknowledge that fact.

In Obama’s speech to his followers in Minnesota, he made several very flattering references to Clinton as an opponent and a force on the American political scene. In her speech to her followers in New York, Clinton also made several flattering references to herself.

Listening to her speech, an outsider would have thought she’d won the nomination and would soon be the next president of the United States.

In the course of a campaign as long and hard-fought as this one, a candidate has many chances to show courage, vision, dignity, perseverance and class. Clinton displayed many of those things during the campaign, but she showed no class Tuesday.

She instead reinforced the belief of many of her critics that she was running for president simply because she was entitled.
