Letter to the editor:

Two can play Republic’s game

Republic Services agreed to complete the closure of Sunrise Landfill at its expense in exchange for an exclusive contract extension for the right to service the Las Vegas Valley. Now it seems to be balking at the terms of that agreement. It wants to pay only $7 million of the estimated $37 million (or so) needed to do the job.

If Republic wants to change the terms of the exclusive contract, I say Clark County should terminate that contract and put a new one up for bids. The terms of the new contract would include the completion of the closure of Sunrise Landfill at the company’s expense. And, of course, Waste Management and other contractors would have the right to bid on the new contract.

Do you think Republic Services would like to risk its exclusive contract? I think not. The company has a guaranteed monopoly and is unlikely to want to risk Waste Management’s horning in on its “territory.” Seems to me the threat of canceling the long-term contract might get these folks to do the right thing, without requiring ratepayers to see an increase in fees, as originally agreed.
