Letter to the Editor:

Is import shipping driving up oil prices?

In the past couple of weeks my purchases have included a toilet seat made in China, wooden toothpicks made in China and doorstops made in Taiwan. It is wondrous to me that these three things could be manufactured and shipped halfway around the world and sold to me for less than $9 total.

With oil prices exceeding $130 a barrel, I have to wonder whether it is wise to use such expensive petroleum resources to ship toilet seats, toothpicks and doorstops, and whether that isn’t part of the reason I’m paying $4.25 a gallon for gasoline.

Perhaps petroleum isn’t so much in short supply as common sense.
