Letter to the editor:

Bigger government not our kind of change

This is in response to Jim Behrendt’s Wednesday letter, in which he expressed his belief that Sen. Barack Obama will attract Republicans to vote for him.

Yes, Republicans (and Libertarians) are capitalists. We believe in capitalism because it has been the most successful way for the vast majority of people to have the greatest prosperity.

Our current president has deviated from these ideals. To think we would vote for Obama, however, because of this is laughable.

Republicans want the smaller, limited government our country was founded on. Obama is surely not going to give that to us. He will bring on only bigger, more costly government programs that do nothing but cost us taxpayers more and more of our paychecks.

Further, most of the problems Mr. Behrendt mentions, such as the plunging dollar, Social Security and immigration, are problems Congress has either caused or fueled — or refuses to take action on for fear of a voter backlash.

Obama wants to expand Social Security, which is already heading for insolvency. I am sure Republicans will see what Obama is really all about — big government — and not vote for him.

Change is the answer, but we need change that is the exact opposite of what Obama suggests.
