The Elevator

Who’s going to the penthouse in local sports and beyond — and who’s getting the shaft:

Going Up

A golf school, too

UNLV’s golfers have returned to familiar territory with recent invitations to the NCAA regionals. The men, coached by Dwaine Knight, will play in their 20th consecutive regional next week in Washington state. The women, under coach Missy Ringler, are in Sacramento competing in their sixth straight regional.

The new Dutchman

Basic High quarterback Josh Ross will play football at Division III Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., in the fall. Fighting Dutchmen coach John Audino has not had a losing campaign in 16 seasons at Union and Ross is his first recruit from the Las Vegas area. Ross, 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds, threw for 1,772 yards and 20 touchdowns last season.

Almost

A tip of the cap, or wrist brace, to the UNLV men’s bowling club team for finishing second in the national tournament last month. The Rebels lost the best-of-three final series, 2-0, to Wichita State, which bowled on its home lanes. UNLV defeated Purdue in a semifinal to reach the final. Rebels freshman Brandon Allred earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

Let’s play 36

UNLV basketball coach Lon Kruger hosts the first Coaches vs. Cancer Las Vegas Golf Classic on Tuesday (at TPC Summerlin) and Wednesday (Southern Highlands). The Palms hosts a reception. Kruger has a patient swing and fine game. He is such a gentleman, he won’t win his own tournament. Will he? Call (800) 227-2345.

Going Down

Almost perfect

The Las Vegas Showgirlz of the Independent Women’s Football League dropped to 2-1 last weekend with a 30-27 loss to the 4-0 California Quake. The Showgirlz play three of their next four on the road, including one at California that could decide the division. Yes, there’s a women’s pro league. The Showgirlz play at Faith Lutheran High.

Bleepfest

Former Las Vegas Stars player Ozzie Guillen continues to distinguish himself whenever he opens his mouth as the Chicago White Sox manager. Henry Higgins (see: Harrison, Rex; actor) would have a field day studying Guillen’s latest linguistics on Cubs fans and, well, we really couldn’t tell because of all the bleeps.
