Henderson student gets Freedom Alliance scholarship

Henderson resident and University of Nevada, Reno sophomore Cassie Donahoe has been awarded the Freedom Alliance scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded to children of U.S. military service members who have been killed or injured in battle. Her father, Army Pvt. Brian Donahoe, who was disabled while on duty when she was young, suffered an injury to his spinal column, causing it to twist 180 degrees and tearing muscles and nerves. He was later awarded the Purple Heart for his service.

The father and daughter first heard about the scholarship while they were watching a talk show on Fox News.

Donahoe, a Foothill High School graduate, has been an active member of her school and community. She is a member of the National Honor Society and was the foreign language student of the year. She played softball and tennis, was on the bowling team and ran track and field in high school. Currently she volunteers at a local hospital and at the Children's Heart Center.

Now that she has won the scholarship she is eligible to receive it each year she is an undergraduate student.

"We are proud to grant this scholarship to such an impressive student as Cassie Donahoe," Freedom Alliance President Tom Kilgannon said in a statement.

Donahoe is a majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry. She plans to attend medical school and become a pediatric heart surgeon. She said her dream would be to attend medical school at the University of California Los Angeles.
