Girls Night Out to help SAFE House

SAFE House will host National Girls Night Out, 5-10 p.m. Oct. 2 at Destination Island Salon and Spa, 1450 Horizon Ridge Parkway.

The general admission is $30 and gives access to the refreshments, up-do demonstrations, chair massages, raffle and self defense demonstration.

The benefit level is $60 and includes a manicure. The empower level at $90 includes a pedicure, manicure or haircut and style.

Proceeds from Girls Night Out will benefit SAFE House, a local nonprofit group that helps victims of domestic violence.

Crafters 'n Gift to host craft show

Crafters 'n Gift will host a craft and gift show, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at Mystic Lodge Casino, 920 S. Boulder Highway.

The show will feature crafters and retailers, clothing, jewelry, purses, accessories, cosmetics and food.

Admission is free and patrons are asked to bring new or slightly used coats for needy children. Those who donate coats will receive a free burger meal at the Mystic Lodge restaurant.

Luncheon, fashion show benefits PEO

The PEO Chapter AI, Henderson, will host a luncheon and fashion show at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at The Terrace, 1361 W. Warm Springs Road.

The event will feature a showcase of fashions by Stein Mart. The cost is $25 and reservations and selection of entree must be received by Oct. 3. Anyone who reserves by Oct. 1 will receive two free raffle tickets. Raffle items include gift baskets, gift certificates and more.

Proceeds will benefit PEO scholarships and grants.

The PEO Sisterhood is a philanthropic and education organization that strives to bring increased opportunities for higher education to women.

Chorus auditions run first week of October

The Peoples Valley Chorus is inviting Southern Nevadans to become members of the choir, which has more than 60 participants.

Auditions will take place from 10 a.m.-noon Oct. 4.

Volunteers sought for homeless outreach

The Help Hope Home Initiative and the United Way of Southern Nevada are seeking sponsors and volunteers for the 17th Project Homeless Connect.

The event will take place Oct. 8 at the Cashman Center, 850 Las Vegas Blvd. North.

Volunteers and sponsors are asked to donate haircuts, dental and health check-ups, meals and more. In 2007 more than 2,700 people received help during the project.

Doors will be open 8 a.m.-3 p.m. for participants for event check-in.

Trauma intervention training offered

The Trauma Intervention Program of Las Vegas will hold its winter training session for new volunteers beginning Oct. 16-26 at the Henderson Fire Training Center, 401 Parkson Road.

TIP volunteers prove immediate on-scene support to victims of crime and survivors of tragedy. Volunteers are called to the scene by local police departments, fire departments, coroner's offices and hospital staff. TIP is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Interested volunteers must attend 55 hours of training and attend monthly, ongoing education classes.

ClubSport Green Valley will host Pilates for Pink at 1 p.m. Oct. 18 on the club's basketball court, 2100 Olympic Ave.

Humanities Food for Thought planned

Nevada Humanites will host the Food for Thought Dinner Oct. 12 at the Stan Fulton Gaming Center at UNLV.

Great minds and creative thinkers from around Nevada will discuss topics ranging from politics to pop-culture.

Tickets are $150 per person or $1,500 for a table of 10. Proceeds will benefit Nevada Humanities, which works to preserve Nevada's history.

Fundraiser planned in memory of golf cart victim

To celebrate what would be Josh Stevens' 13th birthday, Crazy Pita is holding a fundraising event Oct. 5 in his honor.

Josh died Sept. 5 in a golf cart accident at Anthem Country Club. Crazy Pita's owner, Mehdi Zarhloul, said Josh and his family visited the restaurant two or three times a week, and he was deeply saddened by the loss.

"It's tragic, for this to happen to someone who has become part of our family," Zarhloul said.

From 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 5, any time Josh's favorite dish — the kefta pita — is ordered, the proceeds will be donated to the Josh Stevens Foundation.
