When I saw the television spot of Sen. John McCain congratulating Sen. Barack Obama, the thought that ran through my mind was, “I wonder if Sen. McCain has changed his mind about wanting to be president. Maybe he has decided that, at age 72, he would rather kick back and enjoy his golden years.”
When I saw his choice for vice president, my initial reaction was, “This has to be a joke!” Then I remembered my thought from a short time earlier. “That’s it! He doesn’t want the job.”
It’s just as well, because there was a good chance he would have lost the election even if he had chosen a more suitable candidate. If the Democrats can’t take back the White House now, I just don’t know what it would take.
