Morning temperatures cool off city, highs in mid 90s today

Summer's not over yet.

But a hint of autumn swept through the Las Vegas Valley this morning, bringing temperatures that dipped into the low 70s and even 60s in some neighborhoods.

McCarran International Airport recorded a low of 72 degrees this morning between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.

And several private weather stations in western Las Vegas were reporting temperatures still in the upper 60s by 8 a.m. today.

The National Weather Service is expecting more summer-like weather to return this afternoon to Las Vegas with the high reaching 93 degrees under sunny skies.

If you liked this morning's cool weather, you'll also like Wednesday's — temperatures will drop overnight to 68 degrees.

However, the daytime temperatures this week will continue to edge up to the 100 degree mark, according to the weather service. The forecast calls for highs of 98 and 99 each day through Saturday.

The weather service reports that last month was second warmest August on record for the city.

The average temperature for August 2008 was 93.0 degrees, which was just below the record set in August 1995, which had an average of 93.1 degrees.

The average high temperature for August 2008 was 104.2 degrees, which tied for the 17th warmest on record.

The average low temperature for August 2008 was 81.7 degrees, which was the warmest average low temperature on record.

August recorded only 0.07 of an inch of rain, which was 0.38 of an inch below normal.
