Vegas gas prices steady as oil plummets

Gas prices edged up slightly today in Las Vegas as the price of oil plunged to levels not seen since early April.

Auto club AAA reported that a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was selling for an average of $3.681 in the Las Vegas area. That's up from $3.679 a gallon in the area Monday.

Prices edged up one-tenth of a penny statewide to $3.737. Prices were down slightly today at the national level to $3.684.

While gas prices mostly held steady today, oil prices plunged to their lowest level in five months, falling nearly $7 to $108.63 a barrel on signs that Hurricane Gustav only grazed U.S. energy infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico. It was the lowest trading level since April 4, just before oil began an unprecedented march above $147 per barrel.

Motorists in Las Vegas were paying an average of $3.952 for a gallon of gas one month ago. The price one year ago in Las Vegas was $2.711.

The highest average gas price in Las Vegas occurred on June 21, when prices hit $4.279.
