A 17-year-old Spring Valley High School student was arrested about 10:30 a.m. today by Clark County School District officers after bringing a BB gun and a rifle to school.
Lt. Ken Young of the school police said officers were conducting a routine property check at the school, 3750 S. Buffalo Drive, south of Spring Mountain Road, and observed through a broken window what they thought was a handgun on a car's seat.
They called the vehicle's driver from a classroom and questioned him. The student admitted to them that the gun they found was a BB gun and that an unloaded rifle used in target practice was in the trunk of the vehicle, Young said.
The student was taken into custody for possession of a deadly weapon on school property and a minor in possession of a firearm, Young said. Officers confiscated the guns. The student was taken to Family Youth Services detention center.
School police have zero tolerance for any firearms on school property, Young said. A person must be 18 years or older to possess a gun.
Since the shooting death of 15-year-old Christopher Privett, a freshman at Palo Verde High School in Summerlin on Feb. 15, school police have tightened security at local schools.
