Team organizing for mental illness walk

Boulder City's relay team for the third annual National Alliance on Mental Illness walk will hold an informational meeting Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. in the Boulder City Library.

The 5K walk is Nov. 22 at University of Nevada, Las Vegas and aims to raise $100,000 to support the organization's goal of decreasing the stigma associated with mental illness and providing support to families of the mentally ill, Cathleen Koon, a member of the Boulder Rockers team, said.

Koon said the Boulder Rockers team member with the most donations will be awarded a weekend in Brian Head, Utah, compliments of a local resident.

Blood drive planned at LDS chapel

A community blood drive will be held Sept. 4 from 1 to 7 p.m. in the LDS Chapel Gym at 916 Fifth St. All donors will receive a voucher for two free all day passes to the Adventuredome at Circus Circus Hotel-Casino.

Football party to aid Boys & Girls Club

The 4th annual Baughman/Pacini football party fundraiser will take place at 6:15 p.m. Sept. 8 at the Creekside Clubhouse at Boulder Creek Golf Club.

This year's charity of choice is the Boys & Girls Club.

A donation at the door gets guests entry and a door prize ticket. There will be prizes, food and drinks.

GOP women plan convention party

The Boulder City Republican Women will host a convention watch party at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Boulder Inn Suites, second floor conference room.

The group will watch Sen. John McCain deliver his acceptance speech for the Republican nomination, telecast from the Republican National Convention. Refreshments will be served.

Memorial ride to fund scholarships

The Nevada Families United representatives will sponsor a barbecue Sept. 10 to raise money for a scholarship fund to benefit children of fallen service members.

The barbecue is a stop on a monthlong, 6,000-mile motorcycle ride by Debra Argel-Bastian in memory of her son Air Force Capt. Derek Argel, who died in Iraq in 2005. She is scheduled to stop at Hoover Dam and be escorted through Boulder City early in the day and to appear at the Henderson Harley-Davidson dealership, 1010 W. Warm Springs Road.

The barbecue will take place at 5 p.m. at VFW Post 3848, 401 W. Lake Mead Parkway. Cost will be $10 and a raffle will be sponsored by Southern Nevada Blue Star Mothers.

Artist-naturalist to speak at library

Artist and naturalist Sharon K. Schafer will present her photographs, paintings and field sketches at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Boulder City Library.

Her artwork explores the natural beauty of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Gamble-Aires to perform at library

Las Vegas' oldest barbershop chorus, the Gamble-Aires, will give a special twilight concert at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Boulder City outdoor amphitheater.

The concert will also include the quartets Broadcast and Older 'n' Dirt.

Admission is free and attendees are invited to come early, and bring a blanket and a picnic dinner.
