Memorial ride to fund scholarships

The Nevada Families United representatives will sponsor a barbecue next Wednesday to raise money for a scholarship fund to benefit children of fallen service members.

The barbecue is a stop on a monthlong, 6,000-mile motorcycle ride by Debra Argel-Bastian in memory of her son Air Force Capt. Derek Argel, who died in Iraq in 2005. She will also appear at the Henderson Harley-Davidson dealership, 1010 W. Warm Springs Road.

The barbecue will take place at 5 p.m. at VFW Post 3848, 401 W. Lake Mead Parkway. Cost will be $10 and a raffle will be sponsored by Southern Nevada Blue Star Mothers.

Synagogue plans huge garage sale

Congregation Ner Tamid will host a community-wide garage sale Oct. 19.

Everyone is invited to rent a space and sell items. Cost will be $20 for a single space and $35 for a double space. Sellers are welcome to bring their own tables or they can rent tables for an additional $10.

LV Philharmonic to mark 10th season

The Las Vegas Philharmonic will debut its 10 anniversary season with the premier of Masterworks I on Sept. 6 featuring pianist Misha Dichter.

The concert will take place at the Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

A reception catered by chef Gustav Mauler will begin at 5:30 p.m. followed by a pre-concert lecture with Philharmonic music director David Itkin. The concert will begin at 8 p.m.

Community blood drives planned

United Blood Services will be accepting blood donations Sept. 5 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Eldorado Casino, 140 S. Water St.; Sept. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Henderson Muligenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway; and Sept. 7 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 Sunset Road.
