Stop sign installed on Buchanan Boulevard

Two new stop signs halt north-south traffic on Buchanan Boulevard at Veterans Memorial Drive where it meets Georgia Avenue.

The city installed the signs and temporary message boards last Thursday, Scott Hansen, director of public works, said.

The stop signs are in part a reaction to the Veterans Memorial Cemetery adding an entrance on Buchanan, Hansen said. As a result, that section of the road widened by 100 yards.

Hansen said motor traffic to and from the Western Area Power Administration facility and the wastewater treatment plant will be the most affected by the signs.

He said it would also make pedestrian and bicycle traffic to Veterans Memorial Park safer.

Though Hansen couldn't recall an accident at that intersection since he has been in his job, he said the signs will help prevent one in the future.

"It's a nice, wide roadway and cars are generally traveling at high rates of speed," he said. "An accident there is likely to be pretty severe."
