Ex-state employee sentenced on theft charges

A former state employee, 30-year-old John E. Delap III of Las Vegas, was sentenced this morning to two consecutive counts of 12 to 48 months in prison after he pleaded guilty to two felony counts of theft with a property value above $2,500, Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto said.

At the time of the theft, Delap was working as the deputy executive director of the Nevada State Board of Osteopathic Medicine.

His sentence was suspended and he was placed on five years of probation. His probation rests on his agreement to pay restitution of $60,698.54 to the Osteopathic Medicine Board before his probation is completed.

"Mr. Delap abused his role with the Osteopathic Medicine Board and stole public funds for his own personal use," Masto said. "I am pleased that the courts have held him accountable for his actions."

An extensive investigation by the attorney general's Bureau of Criminal Justice uncovered how Delap embezzled the board's money by forging checks made payable to himself and others, illegally obtained and used a state board credit card to purchase personal items and embezzled other funds to pay off the credit card debt and hide the embezzlement.
