Lightning strikes ignite trees in Las Vegas

Beyond the Sun

Lightning strikes around the Las Vegas Valley since 3:30 p.m. have ignited trees, Tim Szymanski, spokesman for the Las Vegas Fire Department.

The latest call was from embers from a tree hit by lightning falling on a building at Martin Luther King Boulevard and Vegas Drive, Szymanski said.

The National Weather Service said most the lightning came with dry thunderclouds, but 0.04 of an inch of rain had fallen near Spring Valley in western Las Vegas.

A trace of rain also fell at North Las Vegas Airport and west of the airport, the weather service reported.
