Southwest Gas requests rate decrease

Natural gas rates could drop for Southwest Gas customers this winter if the Public Utilities Commission approves the utility's request.

The commission has scheduled a public hearing at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Sahara West Library multi-purpose room, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

Southwest Gas has requested the rate decrease because of lower costs to purchase natural gas and basic general rates, as well as changes to service charges for its transportation customers.

Southwest representatives will be at the meeting to answer questions.

The average Southern Nevada customer would see their monthly bill decrease this winter from $78.16 to $76.63, a $1.53 monthly savings.

The rate would take effect Nov. 1.

The commission has scheduled a formal hearing for Sept. 30 at its office in Carson City. A public meeting was held in Carson City on the rate decrease request earlier this week.
