Letter to the editor:

Presidential race offers parallel to 1774

Let’s not let the irony of Sept. 5 go unnoticed. Friday, the first day of the “official” 2008 race for the White House, coincided with the 134th anniversary of the convening of the First Continental Congress.

America’s grievances today against George II are similar to those of 1774 — funding an unpopular war, deficit spending, unemployment caused by a failing economy, and an assault on fundamental rights.

Using smoke and mirrors to divert attention from the intolerable acts of the past eight years, loyalists will try to convince us that four more years is “change.” Patriots will seek redress at the ballot box.
