Mag names UNLV golfer one to watch

UNLV golfer Therese Koelbaek was named as one of the top 50 players to watch this season by Golf World magazine.

Last year, Koelbaek tied for medalist honors at the 2008 NCAA West Regional, was named as an honorable mention All-American by Golfweek and was named the Mountain West Conference’s Freshman of the Year.

A native of Holte, Denmark, Koelbaek led the Rebels with a 73.38 scoring average.

“As a freshman, Therese had one of the best years of any player we have had at UNLV,” UNLV coach Missy Ringler said. “She is very mature, and besides her talent, her biggest strength may be her consistency from tournament to tournament. She had a great summer and I look for her to carry that over to this season.”

The Rebels, coming off a program-best 16th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, open their season Sept. 18.

Event to benefit ALS

The Clark County Association of Health Underwriters Charity Golf Tournament to benefit Lou Gehrig’s disease will be Oct. 16 at Siena Golf Club.

The event is scheduled for a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start and the cost is $600 per foursome. Entry includes green fees, cart, practice balls, hole contests and lunch following play.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is an illness that has no known cause.

A portion of the proceeds raised from the event will go toward the ALS Therapy Development Institute, the leading ALS research institute in the world.
