The Yucca Mountain perfect storm has arrived. First, the decision is finally at hand — the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has accepted the licensing application. If the NRC says yes, it’s over except for dreams of a court victory. At the state level, there have been more and more rumblings about benefits, which is tantamount to a money-for-waste deal, which is politically incendiary. Much of the chatter is from the GOP or GOP-leaning side, but it could become viral. And then Bob Loux, who for decades has been the state’s point man against the dump, gets himself into hot water by brazenly approving pay increases, including for himself, with no authority to do so. And now the governor wants his head. This is not going to be pretty to watch.
