Boulder City High boys soccer coach David Nilson hopes his team can overcome mistakes from its first few games.

“There are a lot of new faces and they’re learning to play together and I’m learning how to coach them,” Nilson said. “We’ve got some great players, I think we’ll be alright.”

The boys team struggled in its first two games of the season, losing to Faith Lutheran 4-1 on Sept. 4 in the home opener and 5-2 to Virgin Valley on Sept. 2

“Those were tough games. We were right there in the first half, and let them get away in the second half,” Nilson said. “But we can fix those things.”

Senior Dan Raddant scored the Eagles lone goal against Faith Lutheran on a penalty kick in the second half.

“We’re coming together. Some of us have been together for a while,” Raddant said. “These games will help us get ready for when league play starts.”

Faith Lutheran led 1-0 after the first half but the Crusaders added three goals in the second to pull.

Sophomore Trevor Montgomery scored both of the Eagles goals against Virgin Valley.

The teams were tied at 1-1 after the first half, but the Bulldogs pulled ahead for the win.

Lady Eagles fall to Faith Lutheran

Boulder City High girls soccer coach Ryan Teepen is looking forward to see how his team responds from a 5-0 loss to Faith Lutheran on Sept. 4.

“This is a chance to see what they do and where they’re at,” Teepen said.

The Eagles are back in action on Sept. 11 at Moapa Valley after a week between games.

Faith Lutheran scored in the closing minutes of the first half to take a 1-0 lead. It scored again 15 minutes into the second half and pulled away late.

“Our ladies played great for about 60 minutes and then Faith scored to go up 2-0 and we were caught on our heels after that,” Teepen said. “Faith is definitely beatable and we will get them later this season when it counts.”

The Eagles started off the season with a 3-2 win against Virgin Valley. Senior forward Lindy Doyle, junior forward Gabriela Correales and sophomore midfielder Marquela Waldo scored for Boulder City.

“The ladies put the clamps on after allowing the second goal and maintained most of the possession through the remainder of the game,” Teepen said.

Lundgren tops at Falcon Invite

Boulder City High junior Matt Lundgren proved to be the top male cross country runner at the Falcon Invitational at Foothill on Sept. 6.

Lundgren took first place in the 2.5 mile junior-senior race, finishing in 13 minutes, 21 seconds, nearly five seconds ahead the second place runner.

“Matt is becoming one of the runners to watch in Clark County. His first place finish against all 4A schools (on Sept. 6) turned a few heads,” Boulder City coach Joe Ringen said. “He is well ahead of last year’s pace and headed for a strong defense of his regional championship.”

Lundgren also had a first place finish in the Eagles season opening meet at the 2.8 mile race at Hemenway Park on Sept. 2 finishing in 15:47.8.

Senior Michael Kelso was sixth in 13:51.9 and junior Taylor Clifford was seventh in 14:02.8 at the Falcon Invite.

“Michael and Taylor are also ahead of last year’s pace. This lead pack for the Eagles provides some interesting possibilities for the regional and state meet races,” Ringen said.

Senior Sara Richner finished ninth in 17:29 to lead Boulder City’s girls team at Foothill.

“Sara is coming around with her form, and she will be a factor in the region races,” Ringen said.

Junior Lue Tobler was the Eagles other runner in the Falcon Invite, finishing in 37th place in 21:21.

The Eagles next race is the Las Vegas Invitational, Sept. 13 at Veteran’s Memorial Park.

Tennis falls to Basic

The Eagles boys tennis team opened Southeast Division play with an 11-7 loss to Basic on Sept. 8.

“It was close, Basic just had a few breaks go its way,” coach Eric Speaker said.

The boys team went 2-0 in non-Southeast Division games to start the season. It defeated Moapa Valley 10-8 on Sept. 4. Senior Nick Stevens and Travis Robinson both went 3-0 in singles play to lead the Eagles.

Boulder City opened the season with an 11-7 win against Chaparral on Sept. 2.

The girls tennis team has not had as much success starting the season with three losses, including a 14-4 loss to Basic.

The Eagles fell to Moapa Valley 15-3 on Sept. 4 and 13-4 to Chaparral on Sept. 2

Girls golf knocking ‘em in

The Eagles girls golf team is aiming to keep its two-match win streak alive when it resumes league play on Sept. 11 at Falcon Ridge Golf Course in Mesquite.

Boulder City won its second match on Sept. 4 at Sun City’s Highland Falls Golf Club.

Senior Margot Potter shot an 82 to lead Boulder City. Bree Morang was the Eagles other top five finisher with a 93.

Boulder City had a team score of 366 beating Pahrump Valley, 393, Virgin Valley, 421 and Faith Lutheran, 445.
