Skyline set for expansion

One of Henderson's old-fashioned Boulder Strip casinos is on its way to a small expansion after the Planning Commission approved the request Aug. 28 by a 6-0 vote.

Skyline Restaurant and Casino, on Boulder Highway south of Sunset Road, will remove its existing bathrooms to clear the way for additional 450 square feet of gaming — a 5 percent increase that will bring its total gaming floor space to nearly 8,500 square feet.

New bathrooms will be built at the rear of the building in an 800-square-foot expansion.

Skyline is what the city calls a legal non-conforming use — a building that wouldn't be legal under current laws, but was built before those laws went into effect and was grandfathered in and allowed to continue operating. Such facilities are allowed to expand if the Planning Commission issues the proper permit.

Skyline is a nonrestricted gaming facility, meaning it can have more than 16 slot or video gaming machines and that it can have table games. State law now requires any nonrestricted gaming casino to have at least 200 hotel rooms. Skyline has none, but was built in 1962, well before the law went into effect.

Skyline has 21 tables and 417 machines, according to its Web site, and plans to add as many as 18 more machines in the additional space.

Representatives for Skyline successfully lobbied the Parks and Recreation Department and the Planning Commission to drop a condition that would have required the casino to build a 12-foot wide trail along its property line at Boulder Highway.

The condition is standard for projects along Boulder Highway as part of the city's Boulder Highway Beautification Project, but Skyline project planners said the building's location near the highway didn't leave room for a trail.

"It would be physically impossible to incorporate the 12-foot trail," architect Gary Hoholik said.

After reviewing the site plan, a representative from the Parks and Recreation Department agreed with the assessment and commissioners agreed to remove the trail requirement. However, a requirement that Skyline representatives meet with Parks and Recreation to discuss other ways of aiding in the Boulder Highway Beautification Project was left intact.
