State tourism director calls it quits

Beyond the Sun

CARSON CITY -- Tim Maland, appointed director of the state Tourism Commission when Gov. Jim Gibbons took office, has resigned.

Maland, 56, intends to join his wife, Donna, in the family insurance and finance services business in Reno, an agency spokeswoman said.

His letter of resignation was delivered to the governor’s office Friday. He had just returned from a trip to Singapore where he was the keynote speaker at the Asian Casinos Executive Summit.

In his resignation letter, he said he has enjoyed the job and would help in the transition to a new director.

Brian Krolicki, chairman of the tourism commission, said he regrets Maland’s departure and added he’s been a “marvelous director” with his prior experience in the private sector.

Before becoming state tourism director, Maland was president of the Reno Hilton and before that senior vice president of Playboy Enterprises Gambling Division.
