Summerlin news briefs

Event helping combat auto theft

Metro Police and the Southwest Business Crime Watch organization will host a free crime prevention event from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Vons Shopping Center on the corner of Desert Inn Road and Durango Drive.

Metro officers will be on hand to do VIN edging on vehicles — where they inscribe a car's vehicle identification number on its windshield or side windows.

"It's very faint — almost like a hidden tattoo on the car," said event coordinator Dawn Marie. "It helps identify the car in case it's stolen."

Law enforcement officials will also be available to answer questions and provide information regarding auto-theft prevention and anti-theft devices.

AARP potluck planned

AARP Summerlin Chapter 5094 has its annual fall potluck dinner on Monday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m. at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

Chicken will be provided, members should bring a side dish or desert.

For more information, call 255-0552.

Fishing event helping foster children

The third annual Child Focus Fishing Event is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 18 at The Lakes. The event provides a chance for 30 local foster children to reunite with their siblings for an afternoon of fishing, lunch and games.

The children will gather at 9 a.m. on the dock at Captain's Cove Restaurant, at 2902 Lake East Drive near the corner of Sahara Avenue and Durango Drive. The morning fishing session will be followed by various games, a Mad Science activity and lunch.

In conjunction with the fishing event, the public is also invited to a pet adoption and metal recycling event on the lawn adjacent to Captain's Cove Restaurant. BB Recycling Inc. will be on hand collecting unwanted metal such as aluminum cans, pots, pans, silverware and wire hangers.

Child Focus provides support services and resources for children living in foster care in Southern Nevada.
