Man killed in high-speed crash identified

The 19-year-old man who died in a high-speed crash Friday after the front half of the vehicle he was driving sheared off on impact has been identified as Ruben Martinez of Las Vegas, the Clark County coroner's office said today.

North Las Vegas Police are still investigating the accident, which sent a 28-year-old man who was driving a gray 1981 Chevrolet El Camino to University Medical Center with severe head trauma and possible life threatening injuries.

Officers at the scene estimated that the Acura was traveling at speeds up to 100 mph when the driver lost control of the car and over-corrected as it traveled northbound on Civic Center Boulevard where it turns into East Alexander Drive, police said.

As the Acura slid across the center line into the westbound lane of East Alexander, it was struck on the passenger side by the El Camino, police said.

From the force of the impact, police believe the Acura driver died immediately on impact. Martinez died of multiple blunt force trauma injuries, the coroner's office said.

Preliminary findings indicated excessive speed contributed to the crash, police said. Alcohol and drug test results have not been completed.

Anyone with information about this accident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555. Cash awards of up to $2,000 are available to anyone with information that leads to the arrest or indictment of anyone responsible for felonies.
