Liberace piano finals set for Sept. 21

The 2008 Liberace Piano Competition Finals will take place at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 21 in the auditorium at Community Lutheran Church, 3720 E. Tropicana Ave.

Eleven finalists, both amateur and professional pianists, will compete in the Liberace style of showmanship and classical genres of music. The finalists, who include two Henderson students, range in ages 6 to 69 and come from Nevada, California, Alabama, Montana and Mexico.

Tickets are $15 to $50 and can be purchased by calling the Liberace Museum, 798-5595, ext. 20, or the day of the event at the Community Lutheran Church gift shop.

Proceeds of the competition will benefit Family Promise and the Liberace Foundation, which has awarded more than $5.2 million in scholarships since it was founded in 1976.

Viva Bike Vegas to help at-risk students

Viva Bike Vegas, to benefit the Las Vegas chapter of the After-School All-Stars, will begin at 6:30 a.m. Oct. 25 at the Regional Transportation Commission Administration Building, 600 S. Grand Central Parkway.

After-School All-Stars provide at-risk youth with after-school programs to build confidence and self-esteem.

The event will feature 118-mile, 50-mile and 25-mile bike rides.

Entry fees range from $25 to $65 for those who register by Oct. 1. A free 5-mile family ride will also take place.

Annual Safe Place Golf Classic set

The Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth will host the second annual Safe Place Golf Classic at 7 a.m. Oct. 27 at the Wildhorse Golf Club.

Costs range from $175 for an individual golfer to $10,000 sponsorships.

An awards banquet will follow to honor donors.

The Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth is also seeking donations of items to include in each player's gift bag.

Event to raise money for heart foundation

The Children's Heart Foundation will host Light Up the Heart of a Child 6-9 p.m. Nov. 12 at Sunset Park's annual Gift of Lights.

The Gift of Lights is a drive-through display of more than 8 million holiday lights. On Nov. 12, the park will be open to pedestrian access and will include carolers and holiday treats.

Proceeds will benefit children in Nevada who are living with heart conditions.

Advance tickets are available at www.chfn.org for $25. Admission at the door is $30. Children under 12 get in free.

Children's Heart Foundation was funded in 2001 by local pediatric cardiologist and families of children with heart problems.

Lecture to explore McKeeversville

A talk on McKeeversville will kick off a new lecture series at the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum at 6 p.m. Sept. 18 at the museum inside the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St.

Peter Huntoon, a retired geology and geophysics professor from the University of Wyoming, will talk about the early settlement for Hoover Dam workers.

Now a Boulder City resident, Huntoon has maintained the River Mountain Trail through Boulder City since 2003. He found part of McKeeversville while maintaining the trail.

Huntoon will lead an interpretive hike on the trail at 9 a.m. Sept. 21.

Scout collecting old flags for disposal

Jack Broadbent, a member of Boy Scout Troop 211, is collecting battered flags for a retirement ceremony later this month.

The 17-year-old will discard of the flags properly by burning them at the Boulder City Fire Station for his Eagle Scout project.

Flags can be dropped off at the Boulder Dam Credit Union, 530 Avenue G, American National Insurance, 833 Nevada Hwy., Suite 4, and the Churches of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1550 Buchanan Blvd. or 810 Arrowhead Trail.
