Frequently Asked Questions

Q: If you turn on your lights and siren, can you drive as fast as you want?

A: No. Using emergency lights and siren (code 3) is not about speed. It's about arriving at a destination quickly and safely. If we become involved in an accident and don't make it to our destination, what purpose did it serve?

Q: Have you ever shot someone with your Taser?

A: No, I've never deployed my Taser except for training purposes. There are, however, several officers in the department who have used their Tasers on individuals.

Q: Are you allowed to carry whatever type of handgun you want to?

A: We have a great deal of latitude on the firearm we carry as long as it's approved by our rangemaster and we qualify with it on the firing range.

Q: Do police officers actually use those push bumpers on the front of their cars?

A: Yes, but not as often as we used to. They work great on steel bumpers, but they can cause damage to the plastic or fiberglass bumpers found on most new automobiles. Sometimes we just have to do it the good old fashioned way: get out and push.

Q: If you lost your portable radio, would you have to change all of your frequencies so someone couldn't talk on it?

A: No. We'd simply log into our computer and electronically disable the radio, at which point it would be nothing more than a 2-pound paperweight.

Q: Do you have very many cars that break down and have to be towed to the shop?

A: Not very often. Our preventative maintenance program keeps our emergency repairs to a minimum. If we tow a police vehicle, it's usually after we've conducted training at our emergency driving track near the dry lake bed. We use the older cars for training, and oftentimes they can't stand up to the constant acceleration, braking and turning during an all-day training course.

Q: Someone told me you carry automatic weapons in your police cars. Is that true?

A: Each patrol vehicle has an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.
