Search continues for man who robbed bank, then got away in waiting cab

Updated Friday, Sept. 19, 2008 | 4:45 p.m.

A man in his 40s with gray hair and a moustache grabbed a taxi in downtown Las Vegas to take him to a Bank of America at Charleston Boulevard and Rancho Drive where he robbed the branch bank and then returned downtown — in the same cab, according to authorities.

Metro Police and the FBI are combing downtown Las Vegas late this afternoon looking for the robber, police said.

The taxi driver, interviewed by a local television station, KLAS-TV, Channel 8, said the man acted perfectly normal, asking him to wait for five minutes while the suspected robber went into the bank.

In the television interview, the driver said his fare was picked up at the Golden Nugget and that's where he returned with the man after going to the bank.

Police do not know if the robbery suspect was armed.

The taxi driver was alerted by his company about the suspected robber, at which point the man fled the cab, leading the FBI and Metro Police to search the downtown area of Las Vegas.

Agents and officers have surveillance tapes from both the bank and the taxi, authorities said.

The robbery occurred about 2 p.m., police said.
