Motor vehicles department head retires

CARSON CITY – Ginny Lewis, who has headed the state Department of Motor Vehicles since 2001, says she will retire in December after 29 years with the agency.

Lewis, who earns $127,721, said she wants to join her husband Steve to work with Rotary International.

Gov. Jim Gibbons did not name a replacement but said Lewis will help in developing the budget to the 2009 Legislature.

The agency, one of the biggest in state government, has an estimated 1,500 employees and has an approved legislative budget this biennium of $248 million. Its main function is issuing driver’s licenses and motor vehicle registrations but is also responsible for emission control compliance and overseeing wreckers/body shops.
