Incoming airport director looking forward to move

Boulder City Airport's new manager said she plans to move to Boulder City before starting work Oct. 6.

Kerry Ahearn comes from Windsor Locks, Conn., where she was airport operations assistant specialist and noise abatement officer for Bradley International Airport, the state's busiest.

Ahern, who is moving to town with her fiance, a contractor, said she looks forward to living in the "family oriented, close-knit" town. "I'm excited to meet all the tenants and all the people who work at the airport," she said.

The City Council earlier this year approved the full-time position on the recommendation of the Airport Advisory Committee. Community Development Director Brok Armantrout currently acts as the airport manager among his other duties.

Of the 40 applicants and 10 people interviewed, the city chose Ahearn for her "relative experience," Armantrout said.

"She stood out as the most qualified and most able to hit the ground running," he said. "She'll be able to make an immediate impact."

He, airport consultant Kevin Flynn and a representative of McCarran International Airport conducted the interviews.

After Armantrout's responsibilities shift to Ahearn, he will hold the title of airport director, handling finances — "approving bills," he said.

Ahearn will oversee all aircraft operations and safety rules and regulations, write grants and contracts and act as a liaison to other city employees, for a salary of $93,000.

The municipal airport is home to four tour operations and more than 200 private aircraft.

Ahearn said the new position will be similar to her job at Morristown Municipal Airport in Morristown, N.J.

In October, Ahearn will be involved in hiring a full-time airport operations coordinator position, converted from the current part-time airport coordinator position.

Airport Coordinator Mike Minshall, an independently contracted employee, said he will apply for his converted position.
