Local students recognized for test scores

Two Boulder City High School students are among 16,000 semifinalists nationwide for the National Merit Scholarship.

Seniors Victoria Miller and Bret Turner rank in the top 1 percent of American high school students, based on their scores on the Preliminary SAT and could advance to the finals for a chance at one of 8,200 awards worth a total of $35 million next spring. National Merit finalists who do not win those scholarships often are competitive for other awards.

A total of 84 students in Nevada are semifinalists. They must apply to become finalists.

Both Miller and Turner submitted to be finalists with self-descriptive essays, SAT scores and recommendations from Principal Ann Nelson.

"For the size of our school, to have two semifinalists is a real tribute," she said. "It's just astounding for us."

Turner plays saxophone in the school's marching band. Both he and Miller are members of Interact Club, which conducts public service projects, and the National Honor Society.

Miller plans to study Arabic and Near Eastern Studies at Brigham Young University. Turner hasn't decided on his college plans.
