Volunteers plan day to work in Pittman Wash

Henderson residents living near the Pittman Wash are coordinating for another volunteer project in the wash on Sept. 27, in honor of National Public Lands Day.

Volunteers will meet at Legacy Park, 150 Pecos Road, at 7:30 a.m. to register and plan, then descend into the wash to install dog waste collection stations, set up new trail signs and restore portions of the trail that were damaged by recent flooding.

A shuttle bus will take another group to Silver Springs Recreation Center to perform similar tasks on that portion of the wash. Work will conclude at 11:30 a.m. and a light lunch will be provided.

The event is the latest effort of Project Green — a volunteer group of residents who live near the wash and have for the past several years been working to remove invasive plant species, restore the wash to its natural condition and install a trail system. The residents have partnered with the city to help plan and promote their efforts.

"This is the restoration of a large natural habitat," said Jennifer Magby, outdoor recreation coordinator for Henderson's Parks and Recreation Department. "We have a dedicated group of Project Green volunteers who are creating a series of walking paths in the wash that give people a chance to get out and enjoy nature."

Volunteers don't need to bring anything, though event organizers ask people who have work gloves to bring them. Magby said it will be important for volunteers to dress appropriately.

"Sturdy footwear is a must, and a hat and sunscreen are recommended," she said. "They're going to be working out in the sun in a desert environment."

The next Project Green volunteer event will be Oct. 25, in observance of National Make a Difference Day.
