Boy, 11, among five injured in two-car crash

An 11-year-old boy was critically injured Friday when two vehicles collided in the southwest Las Vegas Valley.

Metro Police responded at 4:35 p.m. to the crash at Durango Drive and Russell Road. Investigators said a 2005 Saturn Ion and a 2002 Honda Accord collided at the intersection, leaving five people hospitalized, including an infant.

Investigators said the Saturn, which was northbound on Durango, crossed into the path of the southbound Honda while trying to turn left onto Russell. The Honda collided with the passenger's side of the Saturn, police said.

Neither car had a stop sign, authorities said.

A passenger in the Saturn, Giovanni Martinez, 11, was taken to University Medical Center's trauma unit with critical injuries, police said. The other occupants of the Saturn also were taken to UMC. They were identified as 33-year-old Shannon Martinez, the driver, who suffered moderate injuries; Briana Martinez, 9, who suffered minor injuries; and Sophie Benito, 3 weeks, who also suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the Honda, Gabriel Serrano, 35, was taken to St. Rose Hospital with moderate injuries.

Police said the crash remains under investigation.
