Henderson planners approve construction of new school

Elementary school in Anthem Highlands to use new 2-story design

The Clark County School District won the Henderson Planning Commission's unanimous approval Thursday to build an elementary school in Anthem Highlands.

School District representatives said the as-yet-unnamed school, on the southwest corner of Democracy Drive and Eiffel Park Terrace, will incorporate a new two-story design that the School District recently unveiled to better fit in the relatively small 12-acre site.

The school site is immediately east of a park that developer Pulte Homes is building. Henderson Parks and Recreation officials said the park has been designed and construction has already begun.

The only question posed by the commission was whether it would be possible to provide for access between the park and the school.

School planners said it would probably be difficult because of the grading difference between the two sites, but agreed to work to set up a meeting with Pulte to discuss the possibility.

"If those two facilities can access one another, that would be wonderful," Commissioner Craig Burr said.

School District officials said they held a neighborhood meeting about the new school in July and, aside from some minor concerns residents raised about the school's color scheme — which was changed to accommodate their desires — the school was well-received.

The only resident who spoke at the Planning Commission hearing asked about public access to school grounds. No one spoke particularly in favor or against the proposal.

Since the school is in a residential area, it only requires a conditional use permit and design review. The Planning Commission has the final say in both issues, so barring an appeal, the commission's ruling is final.
