Despite calendar, hot weather continues for Las Vegas

Don't put away your shorts and sandals yet for the year. The last day of September in Las Vegas will seem more like the first day of summer.

The National Weather Service forecast for today calls for a high of 97 degrees for Las Vegas, which is nine degrees higher than the normal high of 88 degrees for this date. Today's high won't be far below the record high for this date of 101, which was set in 1978.

Today's skies will be mostly sunny, with calm winds becoming east around 6 mph, according to the forecast.

So far, the morning low temperature has stayed in the mid 70s. The normal low is 63 degrees for this date and the record low of 47 degrees was set in 1982.

The rainfall recorded for this month at McCarran International Airport has been 0.03 of an inch, continuing the dry spell for the year. Normally, Las Vegas gets .30 of an inch in September.

The city has had 1.01 of an inch of precipitation since Jan. 1. The normal rain total for this time of year is 3.53 inches. By this time last year, Las Vegas had 2.02 inches.

Temperatures in the high 90s are in the forecast for Wednesday and Thursday, with lows in the low 70s.

The city will get a break from the 90s on Saturday, when the high will reach only 83 degrees, according to the weather service.
