Letter to the editor:

McCain chooses winning at any cost

My thanks to Ray Harbert and his Sunday letter to the editor, headlined “McCain no longer the hero he once was.” He eloquently put into words many of the thoughts I have had about Sen. John McCain.

I am a 12-year Vietnam veteran and have looked up to Mr. McCain for his honorable military duty and his “maverick” approach to politics over the years. I asked, What happened to this man and this image? Mr. Harbert has answered it completely.

His defeat in 2000 by George Bush turned him into this “political hack” to win the presidency at any cost. What a shame!

He voted against “his own” when he buckled to the conservative side of his party and went against the GI education bill with a flimsy, if not “hack,” view of its hurting the military retention rate. This is taking care of his “fellow veterans”?

What a shame that a man with this much integrity would “sell out” to a Karl Rove mantra to satisfy his ego and win at any cost. And if you think for even a minute that he hasn’t sold out, look at his vice presidential pick (and her interview with Katie Couric, and imagine he has bestowed this joke on all of us), all for the sake of courting the female vote. What a tragedy to have to watch a hero quickly turning into a shameless political hack.
