CSN Boulder City campus to offer classes but no credits — yet

College of Southern Nevada, Boulder City

The College of Southern Nevada’s Boulder City campus will offer noncredit courses as soon as September. But residents may have to wait until next year to take regular, for-credit coursework there.

The college’s learning center in Boulder City was scheduled to close last month until local philanthropist Bill Smith offered to pick up the cost of running it for the state. Smith already rents the center’s building at 700 Wyoming St. to the college for $1 a year.

The agreement for the coming year has been signed with Smith, and the next step is to meet with business leaders in Boulder City to see what courses would best serve the needs of the work force, campus coordinator Penny McCollum said. Details of the agreement were not immediately available.

“We’re really excited for the opportunity to work with the Boulder City community and offer classes out there again,” said McCollum, who also is the coordinator of CSN’s Henderson campus. “We’re thrilled to keep classes out there.”

The fall classes will not be traditional 16-week courses, but more likely professional or personal enrichment classes that may last a few days or a few weeks, McCollum said. The classes will be offered through the college’s Division of Workforce and Economic Development.

The goal is to offer for-credit classes in Boulder City in future semesters, she said.

McCollum will make a visit to Boulder City in the near future to meet with business and community leaders and to do a site visit, she said. Once that is completed, the college will work on the fall schedule.

Once completed, the schedule will be publicized at the college’s campuses and at sites in Boulder City, she said.

McCollum said she hoped to be able to begin classes before the end of September. The regular semester begins Aug. 31.

One curriculum that will not be returning to Boulder City, however, will be the aviation program, she said. It has been moved to Henderson and will remain there.
