A new LED sign welcomes visitors to Boulder City at the corner of Nevada Way and Buchanan Boulevard, at the turnoff to Hoover Dam. It also will promote citywide events.

Boulder City’s name is now in lights as it welcomes visitors to town.

Final work is complete on an LED sign on Nevada Way at the turnoff to Hoover Dam. Now, in addition to “Welcome to Boulder City,” the sign gives the time and temperature and short messages about events in town. Two bronze statues of bighorn sheep and desert landscaping complete the look of the corner.

The $212,000 sign, paid for by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, the city’s Redevelopment Agency and the state tourism commission, is being programmed by the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce. It replaces a plywood sign that held banners advertising upcoming events, which the chamber also operated.

The message board is reserved for events that will draw visitors to Boulder City, chamber Executive Director Jill Lagan said. It cannot be used to advertise individual businesses, she said.

It also will be used for emergency messages, such as Amber Alerts and notices of traffic jams at Hoover Dam, she said.

Chautauqua, planned for Sept. 19, will be the first event promoted on the board, beginning Wednesday, Lagan said. Event notices will be posted 30 days in advance, she said.

Groups will be charged $200 for a message that includes the event name, location, time and date. On the old plywood board, groups were charged $377 to have a banner made and posted.

Groups can apply to have an event posted at the Boulder City Chamber of Commerce, 465 Nevada Way, or call 293-2034. The chamber requires two weeks’ notice.
