Post 31 News:

Legion stalwart recovering after fall

Post 31 members were somewhat shocked and dismayed recently to learn that one of our past commanders and former state commander, and our lengthiest living member of the American Legion, Clayton Glenn, was in the hospital with both legs fractured.

Glenn had been on a ladder pruning a tree in his yard when he fell with the ladder. He suffered a compound fracture of the right leg and a fractured left knee. As of this writing, he is stabilized, but transferred to a rehab center where he will be subject to four hours a day of therapy.

Glenn is a well-known, longtime resident of Boulder City and received his 60-year membership star in the American Legion two years ago. Several current Legion Department of Nevada state officers credit Glenn's advice and counsel for their success in the organization.

The outpouring of sympathy calls and cards as well as offers of assistance Glenn has received are testimony to his popularity. He has the prayers and wishes for a speedy recovery of a great many people in Boulder City and Nevada.

The paramount question he hears is, "Why, at 88 years, were you up on a ladder pruning a tree?"

"Because it was there," he answers.

His good friend, Jack Belleau, says he is going to put all of Glenn's ladders under lock and key and not give him the combination.

Post 31 Service Officer Nancy Nollette, a veterans benefit counselor, will hold a series of discussions at 11 a.m. every second Wednesday of the month starting Feb. 11 through June in the Senior Center's Community Room. She will advise veterans and dependents on what benefits they are entitled to receive from both the Department of Veterans Affairs and Nevada State Office of Veterans Services.

Auxiliary Unit 31 will meet at Legion Hall, 2 p.m. Feb. 17. They, as usual, will have an important hand in planning and working for the St. Patty's Day celebration. Post 31 Chaplain Ruth Taylor, also a member of the auxiliary, will once again chair the affair.

Post 31's Honor Guard was recently called on to post the colors at the Jan. 23 Veterans Dinner held by the Elks Lodge to honor all veterans.

The ever-growing in popularity Thursday morning coffee/breakfast get-togethers at the hall are once again in full swing after a holiday hiatus.

Even though the no-politics edict has been enforced at times, every now and then discussion will move in that direction. As long as it doesn't get heated and disturb the genial atmosphere, it is tolerated. Coffee is hot from 7 to 9 and the buffet table always has goodies ranging from omelets and French toast to donuts and cookies. All this due to the work of Commander Doug McHam and his sous-chef Linda Robertshaw. Members from time to time also contribute goodies they have made.
