A not-so-gentle reminder to support your local arts institutions: Adding to the recent list of shifting tides in the Valley’s art community is the closure of Henderson’s Water Street Gallery. Owner and longtime Nevada resident Fred Sigman closed the gallery at the end of 2008, shutting the doors to one of the downtown Water Street District’s most vibrant contemporary spaces. The space appeared to be on a crescendo: offering classes, lectures and one of its strongest exhibitions yet this fall with Bottomlands: Photographs of the Las Vegas Wash. But Henderson’s arts district has been hard hit, and the gallery simply couldn’t weather the economic downturn.

When reached for comment, Sigman, accomplished photographer and instructor of global art history at the College of Southern Nevada, was on his way to Peru: “I no longer live in Las Vegas.” Let’s hope he returns to reapply his skill and passion to building this arts community. –Danielle Kelly
