Las Vegas records warmest day of the year

The Las Vegas Valley surpassed 80 degrees today for the first time this year, registering a temperature of 82 at 3:20 p.m.

The valley broke the 80-degree mark at 2:43 p.m., said Andy Gorelow, climate expert with the National Weather Service. Tuesday's high reached 79 degrees.

Temperatures are officially measured by the weather service at McCarran International Airport.

For March 18, the record high temperature is 88 degrees, set in 1908, weather service records indicate.

The average temperature for March is 70 to 75 degrees, but Las Vegas will experience more 80s in the days ahead. Until Sunday, that is, when a storm system could drop daytime highs back near 70 degrees or lower, said meteorologist Brian Fuis at the weather service office.

The main feature of the unsettled weather heading to Las Vegas this weekend will be increased winds and perhaps cloudy skies, Fuis said. The best chance for a sprinkle will remain in the surrounding mountains.
