LAW ENFORCEMENT:

Metro takes break from recruiting officers

Metro Police have canceled all police officer testing until September.

Until recently the department was running monthly police academies and holding regular testing dates for prospective candidates in an effort to hire 600 new officers with money from the “More Cops” sales tax initiative — a quarter-cent sales tax increase passed by the Legislature in 2005.

In June, police recruiters say, the 600th officer hired with More Cops revenue will graduate from the police academy. Now that the hiring goal has been met, police testing dates will become less frequent, as new officers will now be hired to account for attrition, Metro spokeswoman Barbara Morgan said.

Lawmakers are debating whether to approve another quarter-cent in sales tax for the hiring of more officers throughout Clark County. Until then, Metro recruiters are backing off the hiring blitz.
