The Palms’ recording studio doubles as a Grammy factory

Usher wrote down his name on the tape during a session in January 2009, said Jeremy Stevenson, an engineer for Usher.

When we listen to music we often don’t contemplate where it was made, but many of today’s top artists can thank recording studios for the awards they receive. Some would argue that the quality of the equipment and the space itself are just as important as the voices or instruments producing the sound. And it just so happens that Las Vegas has its own music-making mecca: the Studio at the Palms.

Since opening in 2005, the 8,000 square-foot multi-room studio has attracted Grammy winners including Mary J. Blige and Maroon 5. And with 2010’s Grammy nominations (announced Dec. 1), it seems that Katy Perry, Monica and Usher should start drafting a thank you note to Palms owner George Maloof.

Perry’s Teenage Dream, recorded in Sin City, is nominated for album of the year, best pop vocal performance and best female pop vocal performance. R&B vocalist Monica received nods for her Palms studio work as well, for best female R&B vocal performance (“Everything to Me” ) and best R&B vocal album (Still Standing). Usher recorded his sixth album, Raymond V Raymond, at the Palms recording space, and it received a nom for best contemporary R&B album.

Considering the advanced technology offered by the studio, it’s no wonder that vocalists and musicians from across the country travel to the valley to lay down their tracks. The Studio at the Palms boasts a tracking and mixing room, a midsize overdub booth and a second studio with an acoustically identical control room. The software, microphones and other recording equipment are exclusively top-shelf, and the studio is even hardwired to record live events at the Pearl concert theater. These attributes helped the studio earn the Technical Excellence & Creativity award for outstanding studio design.

So does the space make or break the sound? Be the judge when you watch the 2010 Grammy Awards, broadcasting from Los Angeles on Feb. 13.
