Court date delayed for man charged in DUI-death of bicyclist

A Las Vegas man charged in a DUI-related vehicle/bicycle crash that killed a longtime Boulder Station security employee last summer will have his next court date later this month.

Clark County District Court Hearing Master Melisa de la Garza on Tuesday continued the felony arraignment for Charley A. Matanza, 51, to 10:30 a.m. July 22 before Clark County District Judge Jennifer Togliatti.

Mantanza is being charged in connection with the 2009 death of Gary John Lommason, 43, Las Vegas. Lammason, a retired Army sergeant, had worked for 15 years on the security team at Boulder Station.

Matanza, who is in the Clark County Detention Center on $156,000 bail, was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of drugs and causing death and on two counts of driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

According to Metro Police, Matanza's GMC SUV was going west on Desert Inn Road on June 29, 2009, when it ran up onto the north sidewalk, striking the rear of Lommason's bicycle. The GMC continued traveling on the sidewalk for a short distance, with the bicyclist trapped beneath it, police said.

Matanza failed a field sobriety test, police said. Neither Matanza, nor his passenger, 57-year-old Ramon Matanza, Las Vegas, were injured in the collision, police said.
