Preservation bonds OK’d; mob museum gets $220,000

CARSON CITY – For the sixth consecutive year, the state Board of Examiners has approved selling $3 million in general obligation bonds to finance conversion or restoration of historic buildings.

The 2005 Legislature approved a 10-year program, issuing an annual $3 million in bonds to be repaid by general tax revenues.

The state Commission on Historic Preservation has already selected the winners of this year’s grant, including $485,000 for Clark County. The conversion of the federal building-U.S. Post Office in Las Vegas into a mob museum got the biggest single grant of $220,000.

The Clark County Parks and Recreation Department will receive $150,000 for restoring the railroad cottage; Mesquite gets $40,000 for work on the high school gym and $75,000 is set aside for the Neon Museum at the La Concha Motel lobby.

State Historic Preservation Officer Ronald James said the program will end in 2014 unless renewed by the Legislature.
