Gas prices in Nevada have continued to rise as summer approaches, with the average cost of a gallon of gas in the state now at $3, according to AAA.

Southern Nevada still has lower gas prices than other parts of the state, with an average cost of $2.94 a gallon in Las Vegas and $2.95 in North Las Vegas and Henderson. The average is $3.06 in Reno and Sparks.

Elko has the highest prices in the state, at $3.22 a gallon, while Carson City averages $2.96, AAA reported.

The average price for a gallon of gas was up 4 cents over the past month, both nationally and in Nevada, and the Silver State’s average gas price remains 10 cents above the national average, according to the auto club’s monthly report.

Gas prices in Nevada are up nearly 80 cents from a year ago, AAA spokesman Michael Geeser said, but the increases have slowed in the past few months.

“Demand has remained low and the relative weakness of the euro compared to the dollar has kept oil prices from shooting up,” he said. “Those two dynamics have played a big a part in keeping gas prices from escalating as much as anything else.”

Nevada has the eighth-highest price per gallon among the lower 48 states. California’s average is $3.15, which is the highest price in the continental U.S.

Gas in Hawaii averages $3.56 a gallon – the nation’s highest.
