Service offers NDOT road updates via e-mail, cell phone

Motorists can now get updates on road conditions from the Nevada Department of Transportation’s 511 service via their cell phones or e-mail.

The service, called ClearPath 511, allows people to sign up online for alerts that can be customized by location. Users can also restrict when they receive the alerts.

The new service includes most state roads, including Interstates 5, 215 and 515 in Las Vegas.

Users can sign up at nvroads.com by clicking on the ClearPath logo.

The service is similar to traffic alerts offered by the Regional Transportation Commission’s FAST system, but covers the entire state.

The transportation department is offering an extension of the 511 travel information system, which launched in 2006. Motorists can dial 511 for road conditions, weather forecasts and road closures. The information has also been available online at nvroads.com, and is now being offered in e-mails and text messages.

“The new ClearPath alerts are an important additional way to keep updated on road conditions,” transportation department Director Susan Martinovich said. “They’re an important way to help us all drive as safely as possible for conditions.”

The service is offered for free, but users may be charged by their phone carriers for the text messages.
